Operating under the IATA code WE, the airline offered a hybrid service model positioned between full-service and low-cost carriers, featuring assigned seating, in-flight meals, and a Smile Plus premium cabin.
The airline commenced operations in July 2012 and quickly expanded its network to serve destinations across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and China, complementing Thai Airways' wider international network. Thai Smile Airways ceased independent operations on March 1, 2023, when it was fully merged back into Thai Airways International as part of a restructuring effort during Thai Airways' rehabilitation process. Its routes and aircraft were absorbed into the parent carrier's operations.
