Mexicana de Aviación, officially known as Compañía Mexicana de Aviación, was Mexico's oldest and largest airline, tracing its roots back to 1921. For most of the 20th century it served as the country's de facto flag carrier, operating an extensive domestic and international network across the Americas, Europe, and beyond. The airline suspended operations in August 2010 after filing for bankruptcy protection, unable to resolve mounting financial difficulties and labor disputes. Its collapse left a significant gap in Mexican aviation, affecting thousands of employees and millions of passengers. In 2023, the Mexican government announced plans to revive the Mexicana brand under state control, with the new iteration beginning limited operations in late 2023 under military-affiliated management, though the revived airline operates on a much smaller scale than its predecessor.
