A tiny ghost town with big Wild West character.
Madrid is a small unincorporated community in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, tucked along the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Once a booming coal-mining town in the early twentieth century, it fell nearly abandoned by the 1950s before artists and free spirits began moving in during the 1970s, transforming it into a quirky arts village.
Today Madrid is home to a string of eclectic galleries, studios, boutiques, and cafes lining the single main road, Highway 14. It remains one of the most atmospheric and photogenic stops along the Turquoise Trail, retaining its weathered, frontier feel while buzzing with creative energy. The town is perhaps best known among film buffs as a filming location for the 2007 movie Wild Hogs.
