City & Place Guide

Africa's diplomatic capital blending ancient heritage with modern energy.

Addis Ababa sits at roughly 2,400 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. Founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1886, it serves as the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, giving it an unmistakably cosmopolitan character.

The city pulses with contrasts — sprawling open-air markets sit alongside modern glass towers, centuries-old churches neighbor contemporary art galleries, and a vibrant café culture reflects Ethiopia's deep coffee heritage. Visitors find a warm, welcoming population proud of their country's status as the only African nation never colonized.

  • •National Museum of Ethiopia — home to the famous Lucy (Australopithecus) fossil skeleton.
  • •Holy Trinity Cathedral — stunning imperial-era church and burial site of Emperor Haile Selassie.
  • •Mercato — one of Africa's largest open-air markets, a sensory overload of goods and daily life.
  • •Ethnological Museum — housed in Haile Selassie's former palace, rich in cultural artifacts.
  • •Mount Entoto — forested hilltop offering panoramic city views and historic churches.
  • •Addis Ababa Museum — chronicles the city's founding and growth through engaging exhibits.

Getting around: The modern Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit (LRT) offers an affordable way to cross the city along two main lines. Blue-and-white minibuses (called blue donkeys) are the most common and cheapest public option but can be crowded and confusing for newcomers. Taxis are widely available and best negotiated before boarding, while ride-hailing apps such as Ride and inDriver provide safer, fare-transparent alternatives recommended for tourists.

Best time: October through February offers the most pleasant weather with clear skies and cooler temperatures following the main rainy season.

Local food: Do not miss injera with rich stews like doro wat (spiced chicken) and kitfo (minced beef), and join a traditional coffee ceremony to experience Ethiopia's beloved brew at its source.
