Gateway to Ethiopia's southern lakes, wildlife, and Omo Valley culture.
Arba Minch, whose name means 'Forty Springs' in Amharic, sits on a ridge between two beautiful Rift Valley lakes — Lake Abijatta and Lake Chamo — in southern Ethiopia. The city serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding national parks, tribal communities, and dramatic landscapes of the region.
The town itself is split into two main areas, Sikela and Shecha, connected by a road that passes through Nechisar National Park. Despite being a secondary city, Arba Minch has decent amenities including hotels, restaurants, and a small airport, making it an accessible stop on the southern Ethiopia circuit.
- •Nechisar National Park — savanna teeming with zebras, gazelles, and crocodiles between the two lakes.
- •Lake Chamo — famous for its massive Nile crocodiles and hippo pods viewable by boat.
- •Crocodile Market — a striking riverbank gathering spot where hundreds of crocodiles bask in the sun.
- •Forty Springs — the lush natural springs that gave the city its name, ideal for a peaceful walk.
- •Dorze Village — hilltop community known for towering bamboo homes and hand-woven cotton textiles.
- •Konso Cultural Landscape — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient terraced fields and waga wooden sculptures.
Getting around: Arba Minch has no rail service; the main options are minibuses and shared taxis that run between the Sikela and Shecha districts and to nearby towns. Bajaj three-wheelers (auto-rickshaws) are the quickest and cheapest way to move around town. For Nechisar National Park and Lake Chamo, hiring a local guide with a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended, as public transport does not serve those areas.
Best time: The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from October to January and June to August, when wildlife viewing is easiest and the dirt roads into parks remain passable.
Local food: Try fresh tilapia and catfish grilled by the lakeside, along with injera served with local shiro and lamb stews found at restaurants throughout Sikela and Shecha.
