Gateway to the Rif, where ancient medinas meet mountain wilderness.
Taza is one of Morocco's oldest imperial cities, perched on a rocky spur between the Rif and Middle Atlas mountains. Often overlooked by tourists, it rewards curious travelers with an authentic medina largely free of tourist crowds, offering a genuine glimpse into traditional Moroccan life.
The city is split into two distinct districts: the ancient medina on the hilltop and the French-built Ville Nouvelle below. Its strategic position made it historically vital as the gateway connecting eastern and western Morocco, a role reflected in its layered Berber, Arab, and Andalusian heritage.
- •Taza Medina — one of Morocco's oldest and least commercialized old cities, ideal for unhurried exploration.
- •Grand Mosque of Taza — a 12th-century Almohad masterpiece; non-Muslims may admire the exterior and minaret.
- •Cascades de Ras el-Oued — scenic seasonal waterfalls on the edge of town, popular with locals.
- •Jbel Tazzeka National Park — rugged mountain park offering hiking, cedar forests, and panoramic Atlas views.
- •Gouffre du Friouato — one of Africa's deepest known natural cave systems, accessible by a dramatic staircase descent.
- •Bab er-Rih — the 'Gate of the Wind,' a historic city gate with sweeping views over the surrounding valley.
Getting around: Taza is served by regular ONCF train connections linking it to Fez and Oujda, making rail the most comfortable intercity option. CTM and Supratours buses also stop here. Within the city, petits taxis are abundant and cheap for moving between the medina hilltop and Ville Nouvelle; no rideshare apps operate reliably here.
Best time: Spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures ideal for exploring the medina and hiking in Jbel Tazzeka National Park.
Local food: Try harira soup, lamb tagine with prunes, and fresh msemen flatbread at the small fondouks and family-run restaurants tucked inside the medina.
