Göteborg's former secondary airport with rich aviation history.

Opened
1940
Location
Göteborg, Sweden
Säve Airport, officially known as Göteborg City Airport, is located in the Säve district of northwestern Göteborg, Sweden. Serving as the city's secondary airport, it handled primarily low-cost and charter traffic alongside general aviation and military operations. The airport has a long history as a Swedish Air Force base, previously home to the F9 Flygflottilj wing before military operations ceased. In recent decades it transitioned to civilian use, hosting carriers such as Ryanair at its peak passenger periods. Passenger operations have been significantly reduced and the airport has faced prolonged uncertainty about its future, with commercial scheduled services largely suspended. The site continues to support general aviation, flight training, and some industrial aviation activities.
Terminals
The airport features a single modest terminal building that served low-cost and charter passengers during its period of commercial operation.
Getting to & from
Public bus services connect Säve Airport to central Göteborg, though journey times are relatively long compared to the city's main airport at Landvetter.
Airlines here
Ryanair was the most prominent commercial carrier operating at Säve, using it as a low-cost alternative to Göteborg Landvetter Airport.

City & Place Guide

Sweden's spirited west-coast city of seafood, canals, and culture.

Göteborg (Gothenburg) is Sweden's second-largest city, situated at the mouth of the Göta älv river on the west coast. Founded in 1621, it blends a lively maritime heritage with a thriving arts scene, world-class restaurants, and a famously friendly, laid-back atmosphere that sets it apart from the capital.

The city center is laced with 17th-century canals and grand avenues lined with Dutch-inspired architecture. Beyond the historic Haga district's cobblestone streets and vintage cafés, Göteborg offers one of Europe's leading amusement parks, a celebrated fish market, and a cluster of excellent museums within easy walking distance.

The surrounding archipelago adds a dramatic natural dimension, with ferry-accessible islands offering rocky shores, fishing villages, and striking sunsets over the North Sea.

  • •Liseberg — Scandinavia's largest amusement park, beloved by all ages.
  • •Universeum — Immersive science museum with a rainforest and shark tunnel.
  • •Feskekôrka — Iconic 19th-century fish market shaped like a Gothic church.
  • •Haga District — Charming bohemian neighborhood of wooden houses and cozy cafés.
  • •Gothenburg Museum of Art — Nordic and international masterworks in a grand neoclassical building.
  • •Southern Archipelago — Scenic ferry rides to car-free islands like Styrsö and Vrångö.

Getting around: Göteborg has an efficient public transit network of trams, buses, and ferries operated by Västtrafik; the tram is the backbone of city travel and covers most tourist areas. The Västtrafik app makes ticketing straightforward, and a 24- or 72-hour travel card offers good value. Taxis and rideshare apps such as Bolt and Uber are widely available, while the flat city center and dedicated bike lanes make cycling a practical and popular option.

Best time: Late May through August offers the longest daylight hours, warmest temperatures, and the most vibrant outdoor festivals, making it the ideal time to visit.

Local food: Don't miss a classic räkmacka (open-faced shrimp sandwich) at the harbor, freshly caught west-coast shellfish at Feskekôrka, and a giant cinnamon bun at one of Haga's legendary old-school cafés.
