City & Place Guide

Gateway to Inner Mongolia's vast grasslands and nomadic heritage.

Hohhot (呼和浩特), the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, blends Han Chinese urban life with Mongolian pastoral culture. Known as the 'Blue City,' it serves as the political, economic, and cultural hub of the region, offering visitors a rare window into nomadic traditions, Tibetan Buddhism, and steppe landscapes.

The city is compact enough to explore in two to three days, with most major sights clustered near the old town and southern districts. Day trips to the surrounding grasslands—such as Gegentala or Xilamuren—are the main draw for travelers seeking to experience yurt stays, horseback riding, and traditional Mongolian performances under open skies.

  • •Zhaojun Tomb — historic mausoleum of the Han-dynasty peace princess
  • •Da Zhao Monastery — 400-year-old Tibetan Buddhist temple with silver Buddha
  • •Wuta Pagoda — intricate Indian-style tower carved with Sanskrit script
  • •Inner Mongolia Museum — world-class dinosaur fossils and Mongolian cultural artifacts
  • •Old Town District — lively area of mosques, temples, and street markets
  • •Xilamuren Grassland — closest steppe reserve for horseback riding and yurt stays

Getting around: Hohhot has a growing metro system with two operational lines covering key urban areas. City buses are cheap but can be confusing without Mandarin. Taxis are affordable and widely available; Didi (China's rideshare app) works well and is recommended for non-Mandarin speakers. Renting a car or joining a tour is the best option for grassland excursions outside the city.

Best time: Late June through August offers warm weather and lush green grasslands, though September brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

Local food: Try shaomai (steamed mutton dumplings), hand-pulled lamb (手把肉 shǒu bā ròu), milk tea with fried millet, and fresh dairy products like yogurt and airag at local Mongolian restaurants.
