TravelerPulse profile

Iceland's main international gateway on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Opened
1943
Location
Keflavík, Iceland
Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is Iceland's primary international airport, located approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Reykjavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It handles the vast majority of international passenger traffic to and from Iceland, serving millions of travellers annually and acting as a key transatlantic hub. The airport was originally built as a US military base during World War II and later served as a NATO facility, with the Icelandic government taking full civil control after US forces departed in 2006. It has since undergone significant expansion to accommodate Iceland's rapid tourism growth. Keflavik is the primary hub for Icelandair and was formerly a major base for WOW air before that carrier's collapse in 2019. The airport continues to grow its route network connecting Europe, North America, and beyond.
Terminals
The airport operates a single main terminal building that has been expanded and modernised in multiple phases to increase passenger capacity.
Getting to & from
The Flybus coach service provides regular transfers between KEF and Reykjavík's BSÍ bus terminal, with taxi and car rental options also widely available; no direct rail link exists.
Airlines here
Icelandair is the dominant carrier and primary hub airline, with additional services from PLAY, Wizz Air, easyJet, Lufthansa, and numerous transatlantic carriers including United and Delta.
Notable facts
  • Originally constructed as a US Army Air Forces base in 1943 during World War II.
  • NATO forces occupied the base until the US military withdrew in 2006, after which Iceland assumed full civil control.
  • Served as a stopover hub for transatlantic flights during the early jet age due to its geographic position.
  • WOW air, a major low-cost carrier based at KEF, collapsed in March 2019 stranding thousands of passengers.
  • Handled over 10 million passengers annually before the COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced traffic in 2020.
