Soviet heritage meets Central Asian resilience on the steppe
Karaganda, Kazakhstan's fourth-largest city, rose from the vast Kazakh steppe as a Soviet-era coal-mining hub. Its wide boulevards, Stalinist architecture, and orderly grid reflect a city built almost entirely by Gulag laborers and relocated populations during the 1930s–1950s, giving it a layered, haunting history unlike most Central Asian cities.
Today Karaganda has reinvented itself as a regional cultural and educational center. A growing café scene, renovated parks, and active universities inject youthful energy into the city. Visitors often find it a refreshingly authentic destination, free of mass tourism, where locals are welcoming and curious about foreign guests.

Getting around: Karaganda has a reliable city bus and trolleybus network covering most neighborhoods at very low fares. Taxis are cheap and plentiful; the InDriver and Yandex Go apps work well and are recommended over hailing unmarked cars. There is no metro. Inter-city travel to Astana (about three hours) is best done by train or shared minibus (marshrutka).
Best time: Late May through early September offers the most pleasant weather, with warm days and long evenings before the brutal steppe winter sets in.
Local food: Try shashlik grilled at local bazaars, hearty beshbarmak (boiled meat over flat noodles), samsa pastries from street stalls, and strong tea served Kazakh-style with milk and dried fruit.
