Windswept Atlantic beaches, pine forests, and old-world charm
Necochea is a mid-sized coastal city in Buenos Aires Province, roughly 500 km south of the capital, best known for its vast stretch of Atlantic beach that ranks among the longest in Argentina. The city draws families, surfers, and nature lovers who come for the dunes, river estuary, and the fragrant pine forests planted decades ago along the shore.
Beyond the beach, Necochea has a relaxed, unhurried character with a small historic downtown, a busy fishing port at neighboring Quequén, and a river—the Quequén Grande—that separates the two towns and offers kayaking and fishing. It lacks the glitz of Mar del Plata but rewards visitors with fewer crowds and genuine Argentine seaside hospitality.
- •Playa Central — the city's iconic main beach with calm waves and wide golden sands
- •Parque Miguel Lillo — vast pine forest park ideal for cycling, picnics, and walking trails
- •Médano Blanco — towering white sand dune perfect for sandboarding and panoramic views
- •Río Quequén Grande — scenic river mouth great for kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching
- •Puerto Quequén — active grain and fishing port with fresh seafood stalls on the dockside
- •Cascada de los Manantiales — picturesque natural waterfall hidden inside the coastal forest park
Getting around: Necochea has no local rail service; visitors typically arrive by long-distance bus from Buenos Aires or Mar del Plata and get around town by remis (radio taxi), local bus lines, bicycle rental, or on foot along the beachfront boulevard. Rideshare apps have limited coverage, so remis stands near the bus terminal are the most reliable option for longer trips.
Best time: Summer (December through February) offers warm beach weather, but spring and early autumn bring mild temperatures and far smaller crowds.
Local food: Try freshly caught pejerrey or merluza at a Puerto Quequén seafood restaurant, along with classic Argentine empanadas and dulce de leche pastries from local bakeries.
