Remote highland paradise in the heart of Papua's wilderness
Sinak is a remote district nestled in the Central Highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia, situated at significant elevation among dramatic mountain scenery and dense tropical forests. It is one of the more isolated communities in the region, accessible primarily by small aircraft, and is home to indigenous Papuan communities who maintain traditional ways of life.
The area is characterized by pristine rivers, rugged terrain, and rich biodiversity that attracts adventurous travelers and researchers. Local tribes, including communities connected to the Dani cultural sphere, offer a rare glimpse into highland Papuan culture largely untouched by mass tourism. Infrastructure remains minimal, making this a destination strictly for experienced and well-prepared travelers.

Getting around: There is no road network connecting Sinak to major cities; travel within the district relies on foot trails between villages and occasional porter-assisted trekking. The only practical way in or out is by charter flight from Wamena or Timika via small missionary or charter aircraft. Within the settlement itself, walking is the sole means of getting around.
Best time: Visit during the drier months of May through October when weather conditions are more stable and flights are less frequently disrupted by clouds and rain.
Local food: Travelers can experience traditional Papuan highland staples such as sweet potato (hipere) cooked in a stone-pit method, along with foraged greens and smoked meats prepared by local communities.
