Gateway to Patagonia's wildlife, whales, and windswept Atlantic shores.
Puerto Madryn is a small coastal city in Chubut Province, Patagonia, best known as the launching point for Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage Site teeming with marine wildlife. The city sits on the Golfo Nuevo, offering calm beaches and a relaxed seaside atmosphere that contrasts with the rugged steppe stretching inland.
Visitors come primarily between June and December to witness southern right whales in the gulf, alongside year-round colonies of Magellanic penguins, sea lions, guanacos, and orcas. The city has enough hotels, restaurants, and dive shops to serve as a comfortable base without feeling overcrowded.
- •Península Valdés — UNESCO reserve with whales, orcas, elephant seals, and penguins.
- •Punta Tombo — largest Magellanic penguin colony on the continent, about 180 km south.
- •EcoCentro — thoughtfully designed marine science museum overlooking the gulf.
- •Playa El Doradillo — beach where right whales surface just meters from shore, June–December.
- •Museo del Desembarco — traces the Welsh Patagonian settlement history of the region.
- •Playa Paraná — calm urban beach ideal for kayaking, snorkeling, and sunset walks.
Getting around: Puerto Madryn's compact city center is walkable, and a flat coastal boulevard is popular with cyclists; bike rentals are widely available. Remises (radio taxis) are the standard door-to-door option and are inexpensive. Local buses connect the downtown to some neighborhoods, but there is no rail service. To reach Península Valdés or Punta Tombo, most travelers join organized day tours, rent a car, or hire a private remise for the day.
Best time: Visit between June and December for southern right whale watching, or in spring (October–November) when both whales and penguin colonies are simultaneously active.
Local food: Try centolla (king crab) and merluza (hake) at waterfront restaurants, and seek out Welsh-influenced cream teas and torta negra in the nearby town of Gaiman.
