Ancient knights, azure seas, and sun-drenched Mediterranean charm.
Rhodes is the largest of Greece's Dodecanese islands, sitting close to the Turkish coast in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Its UNESCO-listed medieval Old Town, built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century, is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, offering cobblestone lanes, imposing walls, and grand palaces.
Beyond the walled city, Rhodes boasts dramatic hilltop villages, pine-covered valleys, ancient ruins at Kameiros and Lindos, and dozens of beaches ranging from lively resort strips to secluded coves. The island blends deep history with a vibrant tourism scene, making it equally rewarding for culture seekers and beach lovers.

Getting around: Rhodes has no rail network, but a reliable public bus system (KTEL) connects Rhodes Town to major villages and beaches. Local taxis are widely available and fairly affordable, while car and scooter rentals are the most flexible option for exploring remote beaches and inland villages. Rideshare apps have limited presence, so pre-booking taxis or renting a vehicle is recommended outside the main town.
Best time: May through June and September through October offer warm, sunny weather, thinner crowds, and lower prices compared to the peak July–August summer season.
Local food: Don't miss meze platters with fresh seafood, pitaroudia (chickpea fritters), slow-braised lamb, local Muscat wine from nearby Samos, and loukoumades honey doughnuts at a traditional kafeneion.
