Gateway to Hebei's history, culture, and mountain escapes.
Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei Province and a major rail hub in northern China. Though often overlooked by tourists, it serves as an accessible base for exploring some of the region's most significant historical and natural attractions, including ancient temples and scenic mountain landscapes.
The city itself offers a mix of urban modernity and traditional Chinese culture. Its museums, parks, and local markets give visitors a genuine taste of everyday life in northern China without the overwhelming crowds found in Beijing or Xi'an.
Shijiazhuang has strong connections to revolutionary history and is home to several memorials honoring figures from China's modern past, including Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, who is celebrated here as a hero.

Getting around: Shijiazhuang has a growing metro network with several lines covering key urban districts, making it easy to reach major attractions affordably. City buses are extensive but best navigated with a local transit app. Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive, and DiDi (China's rideshare app) works well throughout the city. High-speed rail connects Shijiazhuang quickly to Beijing and other major cities.
Best time: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the most pleasant temperatures and clearest skies for sightseeing.
Local food: Try Zhengding's braised donkey meat, Hebei-style hand-pulled noodles, cauldron meat stew, and locally brewed baijiu spirits at street markets and traditional restaurants.
