Ancient crossroads city blending Ottoman, Soviet, and modern European charm.
Sofia is one of Europe's oldest capitals, built atop Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine foundations. The city center rewards walkers with a dense mix of ancient ruins, grand Orthodox churches, and leafy yellow-cobblestone boulevards dating from the late 19th century.
Despite a turbulent 20th century under communism, Sofia has reinvented itself as a lively, affordable destination with a thriving café culture, excellent museums, and a growing art and nightlife scene. Mount Vitosha looms directly over the southern suburbs, putting hiking and skiing within 30 minutes of the city center.
- •Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — stunning gold-domed Orthodox cathedral and Sofia's most iconic landmark.
- •Serdica Archaeological Complex — Roman-era ruins visible beneath and around a central metro station.
- •Boyana Church — UNESCO-listed medieval church with remarkably preserved 13th-century frescoes.
- •National History Museum — vast collection tracing Bulgarian civilization from antiquity to the present.
- •Vitosha Nature Park — mountain park ideal for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
- •Banya Bashi Mosque — striking 16th-century Ottoman mosque still in active use near the city center.
Getting around: Sofia has a reliable metro with three intersecting lines covering key tourist and residential areas. Trams and buses fill gaps the metro misses, and tickets are inexpensive and interchangeable. Licensed yellow taxis are plentiful; use the OK Supertrans or Yellow taxi apps to avoid overcharging. Bolt rideshare also operates widely in the city.
Best time: Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and ideal conditions for both city sightseeing and Vitosha hiking.
Local food: Try banitsa (flaky cheese-filled pastry), shopska salad, kavarma slow-cooked meat stew, and fresh yogurt, and end the evening with a glass of local Mavrud red wine or rakia brandy.
