Desert gateway to the Sahara's most dramatic landscapes
Tamanrasset, known locally as Tam, is a remote city in southern Algeria sitting at roughly 1,400 metres elevation in the heart of the Sahara. It serves as the main hub for exploring the Ahaggar Mountains and the surrounding desert wilderness, attracting adventurers, trekkers, and those fascinated by Tuareg culture.
The city has a laid-back frontier feel, with bustling markets selling silver jewellery, leather goods, and colourful fabrics crafted by Tuareg artisans. Infrastructure is basic but functional, and the cooler high-altitude climate makes it more bearable than the scorching lowland desert. Permits are required for some areas near the borders, so check requirements before travel.
