It serves as the main air access point for Umeå, one of Sweden's largest cities and home to Umeå University. The airport handles both domestic and a limited number of international flights, connecting Umeå to Stockholm Arlanda and other Swedish destinations, as well as select European routes. It is operated by Swedavia, the Swedish state-owned airport authority that manages most of Sweden's largest airports. Umeå Airport plays an important role in the regional economy and serves the academic and business communities of Västernorrland and Västerbotten counties.
