It is operated by Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), a special purpose vehicle with equity participation from the Kerala government, Kannur district cooperative bodies, and private investors. The airport opened in December 2018, making it Kerala's fourth international airport after Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. It is situated near Mattannur in Kannur district, approximately 28 kilometres from Kannur city. The airport caters significantly to the large Non-Resident Indian (NRI) population of northern Kerala who travel to Gulf countries. Kannur International Airport features a modern integrated terminal building capable of handling both domestic and international passengers. It has seen rapid growth in connectivity, with airlines operating scheduled services to destinations across India and to the Middle East.

Kannur International Airport is an international airport serving the city of Kannur, the Mahé district of Puducherry and the rest of northern Kerala in India. It is located in Mattanur, 28 km (17 mi) east of Kannur and 24 km (15 mi) east of Thalassery. It is owned and operated by Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), a public–private consortium. The airport opened for commercial operations on 9 December 2018.
