Originally a military aerodrome, it was opened to commercial passenger traffic in 2018 to accommodate growing low-cost airline operations in the country. The airport gained prominence as a hub for Flybondi and JetSMART Argentina, two of the country's leading low-cost carriers. However, commercial operations were suspended in 2019 following regulatory and community pressure, and the airport's commercial future remained uncertain in subsequent years. Despite its relatively brief period of commercial service, El Palomar demonstrated significant passenger throughput and highlighted Argentina's growing appetite for affordable domestic air travel. The facility is jointly managed with the Argentine Air Force, which continues to maintain a presence there.

El Palomar Airport is a commercial and military airport in El Palomar, Argentina. It is the home base for the 1st Air Brigade of the Argentine Air Force, which is mainly a transportation unit. It is located 18 km (11 mi) west of Buenos Aires, near the El Palomar station of the San Martín railway line. It was created in 1912 to accommodate the Army Aviation School, which was the base for the future Argentine Air Force.
