It is a small regional airport that handles significant seasonal traffic, particularly during the summer tourist season from May to October. The airport is internationally famous among aviation enthusiasts for its extremely short runway (approximately 1,600 meters) and the dramatic low-altitude approaches over the beach at Koukounaries, drawing planespotters from across Europe. Aircraft must execute steep approaches, passing just meters above sunbathers on the adjacent beach road. Despite its small size, the airport accommodates a variety of European charter and scheduled flights during peak season, connecting Skiathos to major cities across the United Kingdom, Germany, Scandinavia, and other European destinations.

City & Place Guide

Aegean gem with golden beaches, pine forests, and vibrant nightlife.

Skiathos is a small Greek island in the Northern Sporades, covering just 49 square kilometers yet packing in over 60 beaches, a charming Old Town, and dense pine forests that roll down to turquoise waters. Despite its size, it draws visitors from across Europe each summer thanks to its cosmopolitan atmosphere, lively waterfront, and remarkably easy access via its international airport.

The island's capital, Skiathos Town, sits on the southeastern coast and serves as the social hub, with a picturesque harbor lined with tavernas, cafes, and boutiques. Koukounaries Beach on the western tip is often cited as one of the finest beaches in Greece, while the forested interior and historic Kastro fortress offer quieter escapes from the summer crowds.

  • •Koukounaries Beach — stunning arc of golden sand backed by a protected lagoon and pine trees.
  • •Kastro — abandoned medieval fortress perched on a cliff with sweeping panoramic sea views.
  • •Skiathos Town Waterfront — lively harbor promenade filled with restaurants, bars, and ferries.
  • •Lalaria Beach — secluded pebble cove accessible only by boat, famous for its arch rock formation.
  • •Monastery of Evangelistria — 18th-century hilltop monastery where Greece's first national flag was raised.
  • •Banana Beach — popular dual beach ideal for watersports, sunbathing, and a young party crowd.

Getting around: Skiathos has no rail network; the main way to get around is the island's single coastal road served by frequent, cheap buses that run from Skiathos Town all the way to Koukounaries. Taxis are readily available at the harbor and airport, and water taxis connect the town to several beaches. Renting a scooter, quad bike, or small car is the most flexible option and is widely recommended for exploring inland roads and remote beaches.

Best time: Late May through June and September offer warm, sunny weather with smaller crowds and lower prices, making them the ideal months to visit before or after the busy July–August peak.

Local food: Be sure to try fresh grilled octopus at a harbor taverna, hearty skordalia (garlic dip), locally caught fish such as red mullet, and the island's own Skiathos cheese paired with thyme honey.

Skiathos International Airport
Encyclopaedia

Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport is an airport on the island of Skiathos, Greece. Its 5,341-foot (1,628-meter) runway is able to accommodate aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 757-200. The runway is characterised as 'short and narrow'. Because of the uneven terrain on the island of Skiathos, Skiathos Airport was created by reclaiming land from the sea between Skiathos island and the smaller island of Lazareta effectively joining the two islands into one larger island, though it was built on land already part of Skiathos. The location was chosen by a mechanic who lived in Volos. The airport is named after Alexandros Papadiamantis, a Greek novelist and native of the island.
