City & Place Guide

Where Navy heritage meets vibrant waterfront culture in coastal Virginia.

Norfolk is Virginia's second-largest city and home to Naval Station Norfolk, the world's largest naval base, giving the city a proud military identity alongside a surprisingly rich arts and culinary scene. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay, the city blends historic architecture with a lively downtown waterfront that has been revitalized over recent decades.

The NEON arts district, a thriving craft beer culture, and proximity to Virginia Beach make Norfolk a compelling mid-Atlantic destination. Visitors find a city that punches above its weight in museums, live music, and waterfront dining without the crowds or prices of larger East Coast cities.

  • •Nauticus & Battleship Wisconsin — massive naval museum anchored by a real WWII battleship.
  • •Norfolk Botanical Garden — 175 acres of themed gardens ideal year-round.
  • •Chrysler Museum of Art — world-class fine art collection with free general admission.
  • •Ghent Historic District — charming early-20th-century neighborhood with shops and cafes.
  • •NEON Arts District — colorful murals and galleries in a walkable creative quarter.
  • •Harbor Park — minor-league baseball stadium with stunning waterfront views.

Getting around: Norfolk is served by the Tide light rail line connecting downtown to the Eastern Virginia Medical Center campus. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) operates city buses throughout the metro area. Uber and Lyft are widely available, and taxis can be found near hotels and the waterfront. A free trolley circulates through downtown in warmer months, and the area is increasingly bike-friendly with dedicated lanes in key districts.

Best time: Late spring (April through June) offers mild temperatures, blooming gardens, and festivals before summer humidity peaks.

Local food: Try fresh Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, oysters on the half shell, she-crab soup, and locally brewed craft beers at waterfront restaurants along the Granby Street corridor.
