It is one of Australia's busiest regional airports by passenger numbers and has undergone significant terminal expansions in recent years to accommodate growing demand. Originally a wartime airfield, the site has been developed progressively into a modern commercial airport. A major terminal redevelopment project, known as the 'Gold Coast Airport Terminal Expansion,' has been underway to improve capacity and passenger experience.

Gold Coast Airport, formerly known as Coolangatta Airport, is an international airport located at the southern end of the Gold Coast. The entrance to the airport is situated in the suburb of Bilinga, located approximately 90 km (56 mi) south of Brisbane as part of the South East Queensland agglomeration. The main runway itself cuts through the Australian state borders of Queensland and New South Wales, though the airport operates on Queensland Time and laws.
