🛃 Travel Documents

Passports, visas, transit rules and the checks airlines run before boarding.

Airlines are fined for carrying passengers with wrong documents, so they check hard at check-in — and refusal there is final. Document rules are set by governments and change; always verify against official government sources before booking and again before flying.

Passport validity rules

Many countries require 3 or 6 months of passport validity beyond entry or departure, and at least one or two blank pages. Renew early: this is the most common check-in rejection worldwide.

Visas and electronic authorizations

Visa-free does not mean paperwork-free: electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) now cover many visa-free routes and must be approved before boarding. Apply only on official government sites — lookalike sites charge multiples for the same form.

Transit rules

Changing planes can still require a transit visa depending on your nationality, whether you change terminals, and whether you pass border control. Self-transfer itineraries almost always require entering the country. Check transit rules for every connection point, not just your destination.

Proof airlines may ask for

Return/onward tickets, accommodation details, funds, and any required health documentation can all be checked at check-in because the destination demands it of the airline. Carry them accessible, not buried in checked luggage.

Quick tips

  • Store passport scans in cloud storage AND offline; a copy halves replacement pain abroad.
  • Check rules for your NATIONALITY specifically — advice from friends with other passports is worthless.
  • Names on tickets must match passports exactly, including middle names where printed.
  • Children's documentation (consent letters for one-parent travel) is increasingly enforced.
  • Official government travel sites are the only reliable source — verify twice, book once.
