Donsol in Sorsogon — internationally known for whale shark interaction — has developed a cluster of small resorts and homestays specifically around that eco-tourism economy. Catanduanes, accessible only by boat or small aircraft, has limited but improving inventory concentrated in Virac and the surfing areas around Puraran. Masbate City has basic transient houses and a few guesthouses serving ranching and mining industry travelers as much as tourists. Legazpi to Sorsogon/Donsol requires a bus or van hire (2–3 hours). Staying in Donsol itself — rather than Sorsogon City — eliminates this daily transfer for whale shark visitors.

Caramoan is reached from Naga via bus to Sabang then a boat crossing — a multi-hour journey each way. Staying at least 2 nights in Caramoan is strongly advisable.

Catanduanes requires a ferry from Tabaco Port (Albay) — roughly 2.5–3 hours — or a small aircraft. Once on the island, motorcycle hire or van rental is the primary way to move between Virac and Puraran.

Family travel in Bicol is well-catered at the mid-range and upscale tier in Legazpi and Naga, where interconnecting rooms and family suites are more commonly available. Many smaller resorts near Albay's volcano-view corridors offer cottages or bungalows that accommodate families comfortably without a premium interconnecting-room setup. In beach destinations like Caramoan and Donsol, cottages and beachfront rooms tend to offer more space than standard hotel rooms at similar or lower price points, which suits families well.

Group and large-family bookings should consider villa-style or whole-property rentals available on Airbnb in Legazpi and Naga — supply is limited but exists.
