Japan Air System (JAS) was a major Japanese airline that operated domestic and international routes, serving as one of Japan's three principal carriers alongside Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA). Founded in 1971 through the merger of Toa Airways and Japan Domestic Airlines, JAS built a strong presence on domestic trunk and regional routes throughout Japan.
The airline was known for its colorful rainbow-themed livery, which became one of its most recognizable brand identifiers. JAS operated a modern fleet and competed vigorously in Japan's domestic aviation market during the era of regulated and later deregulated air travel.
In 2002, JAS merged with Japan Airlines, with full integration completed by 2004 under the JAL brand. The merger was driven by financial pressures and the need for consolidation in Japan's competitive domestic aviation market, effectively ending JAS as an independent carrier.
