Situated on the Dabolim plateau, the airport is unique in that it shares its runway with the Indian Navy's INS Hansa naval air station, making it a dual-use civil-military facility.

It has historically been one of the busiest airports in India during peak tourist season, particularly from October to March. A new greenfield airport, Mopa International Airport (Manohar International Airport), opened in 2022 to complement and eventually reduce load on Dabolim.
